Ozone plays an important role in the prevention of fish diseases in both closed-containment and open-net fish farms, reducing ammonium compound levels, improving colour and reducing organic matter and microbiological activity.
Benefits of ozone in aquaculture include:
Elimination of dissolved organic compounds:
These compounds give the water a cloudy color, are not biodegradable and build up over time. A high quantity of dissolved organic compounds can produce stress in the fish and weak biofilter efficiency.
Elimination of colloidal matter:
These are small particles of 1 to 30 microns that remain in suspension and are tough to eliminate using conventional mechanical systems.
The build-up of these particles can limit the efficiency of the nitrification biofilter and can trigger stress among the fish.
Ozone acts on these particles through micro-flocculation, and they are subsequently eliminated by protein skimmers, filtration and sedimentation.
Elimination of nitrites:
High levels of nitrites can be toxic in fish.
Ozone eliminates nitrites by:
- Direct oxidation of nitrates
- Reduction of the organic load, making the biofiltration and nitrification processes more efficient
Disinfection:
Ozone can eliminate a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and fish pathogens. The effectiveness of ozone depends on the applied dose, the retention times, the kind of bacteria and the organic matter load.
Treatment for zebra mussel control (dreissena polimorfa)
Ozone has been used for zebra mussel growth control in several facilities around the world. Its use has also been employed in feeding pipes at thermal and electrical power stations and fish farms as well as in purification station water inlets.
